In The Land Of Elm
In the land of Elm
The Poppie people dwell
They were half the size of men
And twice the size of elves
They had no enemies
No crimes or even worries
They lived to exactly one hundred and three
And were never in a hurry
In the land of Elm
The couples wed for life
Never looking left or right
A dutiful husband and a loyal wife
Yet still I found it strange
Watching them from above
You see I came to pity them
The Poppie people without love
Edmund, this is dark fantasy that starts out so sunshine-happy in the little how town....though that 103 life span put a jar and a jolt in the first stanza..... I feel so sad for the Poppie people- -they live in what we would think are ideal conditions for society- -no evil or crime running rampant in the streets but without the tenderness and the passion of love it would indeed be a flat-line existence. Great piece of writing, Edmund. 10's all over this poem and its writer.

It brings to mind the white picket fence where the most important thing is image and appearance and behind the facade a dead empty life. How tragic. Thoreau words come to mind 'most men live lives of quiet desperation'. Splendid poem Edmund it makes me grateful for the raw messiness and unpredictability of life.
