where we wanted to plant—
a cutworm squirming.

What a vivid name for this creature that eats roots! This worm is not just another creature sharing the earth- it is your adversary. But I know this from yoir prose comment. The haiku describing the worm as squirming made it sympathetic to me. Did you intend this ambiguity? At very least this short poem arrests the reader's reaction. It's more complicated than just a day in the garden.

as always, daniel, i appreciate your careful reading, comments, and questions—thank you. i definitely rely on potential readers knowing about cutworms and what they do. in this haiku the cutworm's squirming parallels that in my gut as my anticipation has cold water thrown on it. -glen

hi, rini! nice to see your picture and comment. i've been reworking shorter poems this morning. don't know if you've ever gardened, but it's a drag to be ready to plant and then see cutworms in the soil (that eat through the roots of young plants) . thanks for taking the time to give feedback. -glen
