Because Of What You Have Done, A Heart Song - Poem by Glen Kappy

Because of what you have done
every dawn can be as this one—
as fresh, as clean, as full of expectancy and color.

I can look ahead without fear or wincing—
for you lift the lid, the cloudy oppression
from everything that comes my way.

I walk with you—
and you are my sun, my shield, my ever-shining companion
imparting comfort and warmth to all my days.

Thinking long and deeply of how I'm loved
I could tether myself to thought of you and dance round and round
drinking dawns reds and oranges and yellows and blues.

I could dance and spin till I plopped down
most thoroughly, most vibrantly, most happily drunk—
and all because of you.

Topic(s) of this poem: acceptance, christian, dance, dawn , devotion, drunk, faith, fears, god, heart love

As Good Vibrations are to The Beach Boys, so is, Because Of What You Have Done, A Heart Song to Glen Kappy.
I Love Both! I would love to hear this as a song. As I kept reading it, the words were dancing all over the page. In my heart, I felt happy. And comforted. Full of joy. And so very very grateful that God brought me back from the dead! This poem is such an excellent write! I hope that it becomes Poem Of The Day!

hey, richard! thank you for your enthusiastic reception of this poem. it happens to be one of my favorites of the things i've written, one which makes me marvel it came through me. i think of it as having a kind of lyricism, but though i like to sing, i haven't seen much talent in me to write music. again, thank you for your comments; i appreciate them. and be and stay well. -glen

Milan Kundera wrote the novel THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING in the 1980s and interpreted the LIGHTNESS as negative. You restore the positive properties of lightness and it's a delight. Your familiar language already displays lightness; your tone is infectiously light; and the central image of dancing seems to be a kind of leaping from one good thing to another. // You know what I thought of while reading this poem? The Psalmist! !
It is a very strong connection: This is a modern-day Psalm, in the language we speak

thank you, again, for your careful reading and affirmation.

i call this, with a group of several other poems, a heart-song because it came, as i recall, whole or almost whole. and i definitely see the connection to the psalms. i wrote these heart-songs as one who had recently discovered the personal or mystical relationship with God and was getting acquainted with the bible. (my spiritual reading prior had been in the hindu, buddhist, and taoist traditions or works influenced by them.)

though i had no intention of taking a stance on these matters, i felt as a student that the stuff we read in school too often held up the dark and depressing as what literature was about.

i like that you commented on my language. some time ago someone called my attention to the fact our most common english words are from the german stream and monosyllabic. and then, in reading the bible and haiku i noticed how much could be said with simple words and concrete images. poetry is an art of communication, yes? not obfuscation.

I stopped by to read some of your work because of your thoughtful and gracious comments on my recent posts, and I am delighted to start with this one. As others have already accurately pointed out, this piece radiates joy and the wondrous *heart song* as the title suggests and which the following stanzas beautifully capture.
    Bravo, good poet.

you're welcome, bryan. thank you for reading it and responding. you may enjoy my other poems that have a heart song in their title; not all of them sound the note of joy, but they share a direct heart response and homely lyricism. -glen

    A lovely poem!
    I walk with you—
and you are my sun, my shield, my ever-shining companion
imparting comfort and warmth to all my days.

As long as we realise that He walks with us throughout our journey of life,
there is nothing for us to fear. We have to just flow with life surrendering ourselves
    in His ever sheltering comfort.
A full vote for your lovely poem, dear Glen.
