Innocence Poem by Paul Butters

Innocence

Bring back the day
When gay
Meant happy and merry,
And gollywog
Was just a doll:
Black faced with curly hair.
(Would Tiger Woods dolls be allowed?) .

A word is but a word;
It’s We who give it meaning,
Good or bad.

In future times will words like
“Love”, “Care”, “Empathy”,
“Truth”, “Beauty”,
“God”,
Become corrupted,
Even banned?
To leave us gagged:
Unable to say anything worthwhile.
Men who can’t wear pink or purple:
Bereft of words.
Political Correctness holding sway.

Let’s hope this never happens:
We call a spade a spade,
And Common Sense holds sway.
