Into The Great Darkness Poem by Colin Ian Jeffery

Into The Great Darkness

Rating: 5.0

(death)

Into the great darkness
Life's end
We step closer by the day
Fearful of becoming grave deep
Body held within a coffin
Food for the worms.

In childhood
We thought ourselves immortal
Death being some distant stranger
Visiting only sick and elderly
Boisterous health our shield
As we played our schoolyard games.

In adolescence
With hormones buzzing
Our thoughts turned to sex
Discovering new ecstatic pastimes
Rejoicing in falling in love
Experiencing Man's greatest pleasure of orgasm.

In old age
Mind focused on our frailty
We try to pause time
Ever conscious of the approaching darkness
Knowing each hour is precious
And the clock is ticking against us.
