Introduction To Music Poem by Amber Peterson

I ask them to take a song
and examine its colors
like a kaleidoscope

or lean in and hear its whispery voice.

I say pick at the song
and don't stop until they know it,

or hit the repeat button
and listen over and over again.

I want them to ease themselves into the song
and connect it to theirs lives
maybe making themselves cry in the process.

But all they want to do is dance through it
never listening to the words
'just go with the beat' they say.

They then go to the next song
without ever even trying to find its meaning.
