It's Only A Bit Of Fruit Poem by Sonny Rainshine

It's Only A Bit Of Fruit

As I slice the orange and the lime,
locating the equator of each,
its cancer and its capricorn,
then all meridians in between,
I am reminded of temporal things
and the hurtling of time
through the universe.

It’s only a bit of fruit, I tell myself—
green and orange pulp
with protective peel,
but to think that a few months ago
it was an ovule inside
its parent! Have I the courage
to slice into Time itself
and consume it?

It’s only a bit of fruit, I tell myself—
just as I am a bit of mankind.
I too was an embryo
and someday the universe
will consume me and absorb me
in due time.
