Jesus Appears To Thomas Poem by Dr. Antony Theodore

Jesus Appears To Thomas

24 'Now Thomas (also known as Didymus) , one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came.25 So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord! "
But he said to them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe."
26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you! " 27 Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe."
28 Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God! "
29 Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."
(Ref. to the Gospel of John 20: 24-29)

I see Thomas in front of me.
I see myself in this story.
Today Thomas is also there
when Jesus comes.
He was missing a week ago.

I can't get a picture out of my head.
You may know it too. Michel Angelo Merisi
painted it in Rome in 1602.
Really massive - and brutal.
Take a look at the picture
on the internet!
You can see 4 figures.

All in shades of brown.
In the color of the earth.
One of them is Jesus.
He presents his gaping
Open wound on the side
and Thomas goes right
into it with his index finger.

Light falls on this scene.
Light that comes from outside.
If you take a closer look:
Jesus himself leads Thomas' hand.

The figures plainly come
out of the dark.
Has Thomas lost heart?
hesitates and wavering.
You can see the wrinkles
on his forehead.
Big eyes.
Amazement - or horror?
