Knowing What To Count Poem by Jim Yerman

Knowing What To Count

I grew up wanting to be rich
I imagine many people do...
Wondering what life would be like
If all my dreams came true.

I saw myself sitting in a gilded room,
at a time when I was old
Counting all my money,
surrounded by my gold.

I am that old man now
with a slightly different view
of what it means to be rich
and have all my dreams come true.

I've been counting out my blessings...
All the laughter, love and smiles...
All the memories of friends and family
I've made throughout the miles...

And I've come to understand
What is truly paramount...
When adding up my treasures...
Is knowing what to count.
