La Cite.(Translation) . Poem by Michael Walker

La Cite.(Translation) .

Quand la grande horloge
Resonne fort sur l'urne de pierre de Portland, et
Du bois de cedre taille
S'eleve l'odeur de l'encens,
Je m'assieds
Dans le cimetiere du St. Botolph Bishopsgate
En m'attendant a l'esprit de mon grand-pere
De marcher a petits pas du Barbican.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
See Poem Hunter for John Betjeman's life and other poems.
The poem is set in the City of London, where the poet sits down in Bishopsgate Churchyard, having heard the church bell ring out, to wait for his grand-father's spirit to come walking along from the Barbican Arts Centre. The Barbican is in Silk Street, central London.
John Betjeman was an Anglican, and many of his poems are either religious, or they mention English churches. I think this poem succeeds, although if you did not believe in souls, it would not mean as much.
