POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Songwriting is usually hard work, which, for Cohen, could extend over several months for one song. He wrote of 'cracking the code of a song'. He could get distracted of course by the thought of a desirable woman, or honour, but Mercy returns him to the songwriting.
