La Tante Helene. (Translation) .
Mademoiselle Helene Slingsby etait ma tante non mariee,
Et elle habita une petite maison pres d'une place a la mode
Soignee de quatre domestiques.
Maintenant quand elle mourut il y avait le silence au ciel
Et le silence a son bout de la rue.
On avait baisse les volets et l'ordonnateur de pompes funebres s'essuya les souliers-
Il savait que cette sorte de chose etait arrivee avant.
On pourvoyait genereusement les chiens,
mais bientot apres le perroquet mourut lui aussi.
La pendule Dresden continuait a tictaquer sur la tablette de cheminee,
Et le valet de pied s'assit sur la table a diner
En tenant la deuxieme domestique sur ses genoux-
Elle qui avait toujours ete si prudente quand sa maitresse etait vivante.

The poet's maiden aunt lived comfortably in a small house near the square, and had four servants. After she died, her pets were well looked after, the clock kept ticking and life went on with the shutters drawn for a while. Two of the servants are less discreet now that their mistress is gone, the maid sitting on the footman's knees on the table. Harmless.The world of having servants do the work for you is foreign to me. Nor do I care for dogs, but it is still a good poem, that makes a statement about human nature.
