Last Day Poem by Thomas Plotz

Last Day

Last day of July -

Saw Sunday Morning, News
Went to church, a smirch of awe came over my face,
Cut out early, after my donation, shaking of grace and peace
Maybe it was a story the priest said,
Maybe I missed someone, I should have seen;
Saw my lover looking back, with a look of concern,
As to say, I'm here for you brother…

Walked to the park a few blocks away
Had a short stay, at Gods church
Soft wind, birds sing, flowers of purple and red, swayed
As to say, it will be OK…

I walked back to the car and met patrons,
Coming out of mass, one turned his left wrist,
Checked the time, and with a twist,
Shook his head in judgement,
For I knew this brother of mine; but
If he truly knew me, and what happened
He would understand;
I felt the tears welting up, and couldn't stay,

Any longer;
On this last,

Day…
