Goodbye O' nightingale of our country,
tomorrow we will rise listening to your songs
forever we will recollect and revel in your melodies
and just as we wander off to sleep
we will sigh as we listen to your voice singing
'aisa desh hai mera' and 'lag jaa gale' -
'my country is just this' and 'let us embrace each other',
and we will miss you and grieve for you timelessly.

The power of your voice was so magical
the songs you sang were so remarkable;
it was you who gave life to those lyrics
it was you who turned those verses into sweet melodies;
those songs were so significant
that music along with made it all so mystical;
it took one thro that stairway of imagination
as everyone kept humming your songs
attributing them to their own episodes
of love and loneliness, of joy and sadness;

your song albums provided a connection
to every mind when times were better or worse;
it made lips to keep humming your songs
and find solace and support, joy and relevance;
your songs touched each heart with greatness of attachment
just as India now feels a connection with your demise;
and as you loved India and Indians just as much
Indians also loved you for the songs you sang
as you took everyone on that journey of love
which you endorsed in every song you sang
with such enchantment of joyfulness
that even pain could reverberate silently
and express the story of its depth and existence.

So goodbye to our Indian princess of songs,
may you find the altar of heaven to thank God
for blessing you with a voice so aspiring and impressive
that it will still make the world to sing along with you
though you will be gone so far away from this universe.
