Le Col Haast.(Translation) . Poem by Michael Walker

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The poem is set at Haast Pass in the Southern Alps of New Zealand.
The wild beauty of nature-the ferns, mountains and glaciers-contrasts with life in the towns, where there are men drinking in the pub and love. There is also the near death among people of empty custom and habits; and children who are immature.
I find power in the words 'Return from here', that is to the towns in spite of the natural beauty of the Haast Pass. He can learn nothing from the fern spores and the glacier melting down to the Tasman.
