This a short ode to the President of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln. Hughes writes in a familiar tone, 'Old Abe', not 'Abraham,
but respectfully. His mode of address recalls his earlier poem, 'The Negro Speaks of Rivers: 'I heard the singing of the Mississippi when Abe Lincoln/ went down to New Orleans...'
Hughes refers to the large marble statue of Lincoln in Washington, where he sits lonely for 'a million, million years'. It only seems to be that long, of course. His silence contrasts with his eloquent speeches during and after the Civil War.
Yet Abraham Lincoln remains a voice against the timeless walls of segregation, slavery for negroes: Lincoln is an advocate for negroes against slave-owning whites.
Abraham Lincoln (1861-1865)was the sixteenth president of the U.S. He was president 1861-1865. In 1865 Lincoln was assassinated by John Booth at a theatre. Lincoln was a careful, elegant writer and an inspiring speaker. This is a famous excerpt from his Second Inaugural Address,4 March,1865: 'With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind the nation's wounds...to do all which may achieve a just and lasting peace among ourselves and all nations'.
