Rating: 5.0

A mes freres
A mes freres-
Qui dorment sur les bancs de fer
Derriere le Bibliotheque du Parc Grant.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This poem gives the dark side of Langston Hughes' vision-the poverty and homelessness for some negroes. These African-American men are reduced to sleeping on iron benches in Grant Park. Chicago. No home, no job, no money. Hughes identified completely with African Americans (' my people')and he blamed white people ('they')for racial injustice. Hughes thought that white people oppressed blacks, and this was his position on race relations in the U.S.A. all his life.He had compassion for victims of poverty. He would make his poems a voice for the oppressed, which he did.
