Le Printemps A Belfast.(Translation) .
En me promenant parmi les miens ce matin venteux
Dans une maree de soleil entre l'averse et l'averse,
Je reprends ma vielle conspiration avec la pierre
Mouillee et les images maladroites du coeur lorgnant.
Encore une fois, comme avant, je me rappelle de ne pas oublier.
Il y a une fierte contrariante en etant de la cote
Des anges tombees et en refusant de me lever.
Nous pourrions etre tous sauves en tenant l'oeil sur la colline
En haut de toutes les rues, car la voila,
Eternellement, si quand meme hors de propos, visible-
Mais nous cedons plutot aux formules amusantes,
Le mystere faux du signe de tete entendu;
ou nous gardons le silence maussade a la lumiere et a l'ombre,
Repetant nos saluts intelligents sous
Le regard froid d'un Dieu sanctimonieux.
Une partie de mon esprit doit apprendre sa place,
Les choses qui ont lieu dans la cuisine des maisons
Et les ruelles resonnantes de cette cite desesperee
Devraient engager plus que mon interet desinvolte,
Exiger plus d'interet que ma pitie desinvolte.

Derek Mahon is a Northern Irish Protestant, born in Belfast, hence 'walking among my own this windy morning'. He has also lived in the U.S. and the Republic of Ireland. There is no religious prejudice in his writing and in fact he is on the side 'of the fallen angels'.
It is spring time in Belfast, 'this desperate city', a time of hope, despite all the sectarian conflict between Protestant and Catholic. The poet should take more interest in the poor, who live in tenements. In honesty, he mentions his 'casual interest/ casual pity'.
I rate Derek Mahon as a major Irish poet.
