Like An Ember Poem by Suzanne Hayasaki

Like An Ember

Rating: 5.0

Let me burn somewhere deep in your heart
Like a live ember buried in the ashes of our past.
Let my heat rekindle the passions of your youth
When middle age weighs you down with its ugly truths.

Your memory of my face may fade
But what was meaningful will remain
Snapping synapses of laughter
Biting reminders of pain.

I, too, carry you within me
Like a splinter hidden beneath my skin.
I remember how high we climbed
And how I fell as I watched you fly.

I survived.
You thrived.
That is how I would have it.
For you are the future, I your past.

And so on mild days like this
I sit in the grass and watch the ants
And think of where you might be
And where our paths must lead us
Separately.

Hey, Suzanne! First a heads up—PH has not been notifying me when you respond to my comments—which is a drag because I value the give and take, the learning, of conversation about the craft of poetry. You are one of a few I’ve found in PH with an excellent command of English and consistentcy in your craft. This poem makes me think back on past loves which I rarely write about because I mostly want to focus on the one I have now and because I regret my selfishness in the ones past. -Glen
