Like Rip Van Winkle Poem by Melody McKinstrie

Like Rip Van Winkle

Rating: 5.0

I am not the fairy tale type
I am more like Rip Van Winkle,
My slumber does not lead to a Prince Charming,
It just leads to nostalgic sadness.

I long for the days of old
But not those that were bad of course,
No the days I long for are the ones that passed
With smiles and laughter
The ones of pleasantness and celebrations.
The ones in which my loved ones lived and flourished.

I am not the fairy tale type,
I am just an older version of a little girl,
I dare not believe in happily ever after,
My hopes have been dashed before.

It is not that I am cynical
I just have become skeptical
I love the idea of being happy for amounts of time
But it is unreasonable to expect this forevermore.

Do we all want to be a sleeping beauty?
If the choice were more like Rip Van Winkle,
For that makes more sense to me
Than awakening by a Prince Charming's kisses.

Awake from a slumber
But still you have a life,
It is just not one you easily recognize,
For time has not stood still, it has passed.

Rip, you model of sedateness,
Rip, you example of carelessness,
We mourn with you when you wake
Of the losses you incurred while you slept
But the pain was not felt then
It was delayed
Is that not some kind of justice?
Is that not some kind of penance?
You see no fairy tale hero or heroine,
A man who slept through a revolution
Only to be confronted by uncomfortable changes.
