Lilac Love Poem by ShellyBean Stanowski

Lilac Love

The ride seemed longer than usual tonight.
Blessed Friday!
She could hardly wait to get home.
All she could think about was her lilacs today,
at work, her glorious lilacs.
She had noticed that her lilac bushes
were finally blooming this morning,
but in her haste, grabbing a kiss
from her husband and a pop-tart,
she had no time to even enjoy a sniff
of their delicious fragrance.

Frantically pulling in the driveway
she pushes open the car door,
almost tripping on a rock as she runs
to the side of their brick house,
where she had nurtured her darling lilacs
all these years.
Lovely visions of white, lavender and wine ones,
filling her mind's eye, their little perfumed heads
waiting for her presence......

They're gone! ! !
Every last blessed bloom was gone! !
How could this be?
Oh, not the Johnson's kids again!
I'll kill them all for sure this time!
It had to be them, she was remembering
how those three brats had 'helped'
themselves to her climbing roses last summer.
She had made it thru the winter with the hopes
of seeing her innocent flowers.
Just wait 'til I get in the house & call their mother!
They will pay this time....street urchins!

Flying to her front door with keys in hand
she mumbles out loud,
'This time I'm calling the police.
No, I'll wait 'til Rick comes home,
he will take care of it.'
Cracking the red door, she stopped
as she inhaled an all too familiar scent....
lilacs, her lilacs!
Nostalgic feelings came wafting thru her memories.
Wait! Her lilacs?

Tiptoeing thru the threshold, like a thief in the night,
finding them there, in her foyer, her lilac heads.
All three colors brimming over vase after vase.
As she walked thru the rest of the house,
wondering if she was in a lilac dream,
she counted the vases, jars, baskets..
15,16,17....
No she wasn't in a dream, she was in heaven!
Then it dawned on her,
her wonderful husband had done this for her!
He must have came home at lunchtime,
taking his precious time to surprise her
with her fragrant posies,
placed strategically throughout their house.

Following the trail up the staircase,
the heart shaped leaves filling her heart
with love for this loving man.
Growing a little frazzled at the site
of her darling lilacs layed out.
Laughing to herself at the thought of him,
out there picking her flowers and
running around the house in search of homemade vases,
But warmth began to engulf her at the thought of him,
laying each flower out
in just the right place for her to enjoy.
The smidgen of anger overshadowed by his love
as she walks into the room and picks up a note,
from the bed, that reads.....

'Anticipating the night...
all my love,
Rick'

As she picked up a lilac and placed it
behind her right ear,
she walked over to her dresser,
opening out her lingerie draw,
She pulled out a lavender nightie,
thinking to herself...
'Mmmm, wait 'til you see what I have in store
for you dear man.'
