Tune: "The Heavenly Fairy"
Title: "Listening to a sad song,
With wine cup in hand, l drank deep and long"
— by Zhang Xian (Song Dynasty)
— Translated by Frank C Yue
Listening to a sad song,
With wine cup in hand, l drank deep and long.
I woke up at noon, my drunkenness had faded away.
But the melancholy feelings were here to stay.
To my youth l had said goodbye.
When would the youthful days come by?
Looking at the mirror in late evening,
I lament that the scenes were fast changing.
Many a fond memory
I can only re-live in reveries.
On the sand, a pair of mandarin ducks wild
Are resting by the pond side.
While through the clouds the Moon is breaking,
With their shadows the flowers are playing.
Layers of curtains cover up the lamp's light,
The winds are blowing stronger tonight.
People have have just fallen asleep.
Tomorrow, in fallen petals the garden path will be buried deep.
