Sub se pehlay din
khuda ne kuch banaya
aur har cheez apnay aap
bani hui aa gayi:
seconds hi na guzray thay
k sex, jaanwar, saansaiN aur rabies;
bhookh, chickitsa, ilaaj
kaam-vaasan aur kaam-vaasan ka assvikaar;
jhund main juDi cheezaiN
jo dal main jhamgat karti hain;
loDay ki mutaaee, har roz ka feeka kaam
gitti, kunkree, goo, gobar, vishta
aur goo k sub kaam-kaaj;
peDon k tan ka ander chakar,
baraf se tootee tehniaN,
sooroN k dil, aur taaray,
raaz, duvida aur kaantay ki puchli waali macHli,
keeDay, khoon
dilchasp bataain aur maut,
aur fir hum ko paida kar diya,
khaali hum ko hi nahin
hamaray liyay us ne virus bhi banaaey
dukh diya, jigyasa di
gaanay hum ko de diyay
jhoothi moothi kahaniaN banaa di,
aur hamaray gaanay un kahanioN k
jo hum sub bhool gayey hain,
aur ye bhi yaad nahin hai
k hum un ko bhool gayey hain.
Aur har cheez jo us ne banaaee
un sub ko saath rakhne k liyay
us ne waqt banaaya aur aatay jaatay
jaatay aatay mausam banaayey
galun, naash, jalan jin ka
waqt aanaey pe ho jata hai

Makebelieve
by Pádraig Ó Tuama
And on the first day
god made
something up.
Then everything came along:
seconds, sex and
beasts and breaths and rabies;
hunger, healing,
lust and lust's rejections;
swarming things that swarm
inside the dirt;
girth and grind
and grit and shit and all shit's functions;
rings inside the treetrunk
and branches broken by the snow;
pigs' hearts and stars,
mystery, suspense and stingrays;
insects, blood
and interests and death;
eventually, us,
with all our viruses, laments and curiosities;
all our songs and made-up stories;
and our songs about the stories we've forgotten;
and all that we've forgotten we've forgotten;
and to hold it all together god made time
and those rhyming seasons
that display decay.
