Making Sense Poem by Caroline Noonan

Making Sense

Rating: 5.0

I was told from a young age that everyone should have sense
We should all have common sense at the very least
Which meant there were a few different types of sense.
And the common one, the least of all of them which sounds so very ordinary to me seemed to be the most valuable. Everyone should have common sense I kept hearing. When I overheard the adults talk about someone who committed a horrifyingly stupid act, it was always followed by "they have no common sense"
Well all of this made No sense to me
What was this common sense that seemed to give you wise powers and aids your survival, but is given the most basic title of common. Should it not be given a more majestic title if it protected your life and prevented you from doing the most foolish acts!  Now that makes no sense. I wonder if the people who made this up had any sense and here we are all trying to make sense out of the whole thing.

So let's look at the types of sense these Sense title creators have made
Well there's "No Sense" which seems to me why bother dedicating a title to something that's not there.
Then there is "Common Sense" which we have already established as being unjustly named.
Then there is "Full of Sense" which sounds quite overwhelming and over rated.
Oh and how could I have forgotten "Perfect Sense" quite a standard to live up to. Explain that one please! !
"Any Sense" Are we to question it's very existence?
Oh it is also something we can make. Yes we can "Make Sense." Sounds so powerful. Are you still with me?
Can you make sense of all of this?

It also seems to be something that is measured in amounts; No sense and Full of sense we have covered, then there is A little sense, Some sense, A lot of sense
Who assigned these amounts?
There are no guidelines as to how much or when to use it, but look around and you will see the jury is out on this one!
And are we not all going in different directions for one type of sense to make the same sense for all of us.

And if you sit and really think about all of this it makes no sense and perfect sense!
But I'm sure you will make some sense out of it, or have the common sense to make a little sense, or maybe a lot of sense, full sense, or any sense of it.

Witty utterances set aside for sober reflection. Your insight into the intricacies of 'sense' is quite impressive, and your persuasive rendition, great. Thanks for sharing Caroline and do remain enriched.
