Malayalam 33 - ശലഭപ്പുഴു ഞാൻ Poem by Unnikrishnan Sivasankara Menon

നിദ്രസ്ഥയാം ശലഭപ്പുഴു തന്റെ
നൂൽക്കൂടു ഭേദിച്ചുണരുന്ന പോലെ
വസ്ത്രാഞ്ചലത്താലെനിക്കു നിങ്ങൾ തീർത്ത
കാരാഗൃഹമിന്നു തകർത്തെറിയും ഞാൻ.

മുളയ്ക്കുമെനിക്കിന്നു ചിറകുകൾ,
തുറക്കുമെൻനഭ, സ്സെൻ പകലും പിറക്കും.
കണ്ടാലറയ്ക്കും പുഴുവി, ന്നെങ്കിലും
ഈ രാവിരുട്ടി വെളുക്കുമ്പോൾ കണ്ണി-
ന്നിമ്പമേകും നിറക്കൂട്ടണിഞ്ഞു പൊൻ-
പൂപോൽ മനോഹര ഷഡ്പദമായിടും ഞാൻ.

ചവർക്കും തരുപത്രങ്ങൾ തിന്നു തീർത്ത്
സസ്യവംശത്തിനു നാശം വിതയ്ക്കും പരാദ-
ജീവിതം വിട്ടിനിയ്ക്കും മധുമാത്രഭക്ഷിയായ്
പരാഗണം സാദ്ധ്യമാക്കും പത്രിബന്ധുവായിടും.
ത്യജിച്ചു പുഴുവെന്ന നികൃഷ്ട ജീവൻ
പതംഗജാലത്തിലൊരംഗമാകും.

പദാവലി:

1) നിദ്രസ്ഥ: one who is in a deep long slumber; pupal slumber
2) ശലഭപ്പുഴു: caterpillar
3) നൂൽക്കൂടു: cocoon, pupal encasement
4) വസ്ത്രാഞ്ചലത്താലെനിക്കു നിങ്ങൾ തീർത്ത കാരാഗൃഹം: the cocoon is an encasement made of thread produced by the body of the caterpillar for the pupa. It is metaphorical of a prison. The claim "നിങ്ങൾ തീർത്ത" could be considered untrue because the cocoon's thread originates from the body of the caterpillar itself. But it is the "authority" of nature that has programmed the body and life of the larva that is questioned here. The pupa breaks this prison by its will.
The persons, incidents and ideology indicated by the metaphor is obvious.
5) രാവിരുട്ടി വെളുക്കുമ്പോൾ: the metaphor is obvious
6) ഷഡ്പദം= one with six legs (ശലഭം) . Whereas man has just one pair of legs, a butterfly is endowed with six legs in addition to its pair of wings. Indicates its superiority over man.
7) തരുപത്രങ്ങൾ തിന്നു തീർത്ത്: caterpillar feeds on green leaves and thus is a serious menace to agriculture.
8) പരാദജീവിതം: parasitic life
9) മധുമാത്രഭക്ഷി: butterflies feed on nectar of flowers. They do not harm the flower or the fruit in the making. But the butterflies facilitate growth of flowers into fruit by aiding pollination(പരാഗണം) .
10) പത്രിബന്ധു: friend of plants
11) പതംഗജാലം: the elite group of fauna that can fly (excludes aeroplanes and drones) . Though a little far-fetched, the butterfly is now a member of the group with eagles and kites.
