Memory Lane - Poem by Ashley Fortin

What a love we shared. You know it too. Or you did. Sometimes I go back and think about how...

It started out like a day of homework and school,
The lectures on biology and the notes in chemistry
The sun outside calling you
And the feeling of the best days of your life.

Then it was a date - sitting in Romeo's,
Listening to your horrid jokes...
They made me laugh of many things.
You're love for Monty Python.
What?

A strange mix. A cocktail of defeat. One only lovers know.
And one...
One... only those - victims and true guilty partakers - of adultery know.

Yes, you sat there, we joked about simple things.
Like a glass full of water.
Each
Sip
You
Took.

And the movies, classic.
Horrible comeadies...
I never let you know though. I hated that movie.
How
Lovely
You
Looked.

Then it was weekends at my house, walking down by the beach.
We always chose the bench at the end of the path...
Away
From
Everything
Else.

Then it was weekends at your house, walking by the creek.
I would walk through the water - try not to get my pants soaked.
You skipped rocks and tried to show me how.
Oh
How
You
Tried.

Every street and every house hold object we maured
With the sweet trace of our memories.
And how long that trace lasts...
It's
Still
There...
Everywhe re.

Then you left to a place far away, anywhere here. Anywhere here
That wasn't here... because you wanted... what?
I was the only thing. Was that why you left?
Get
Rid
Of
Me?

We talked everyday on the phone, till three and four when the sun came up.
All the way from eight and nine when others were tiring of the day.
All we wanted...
Were
Our
Voices.

Then you came back one day... June 10th to be exact but we had already been
Together for a time. Since May 7th to be exact.
And I don't think for one minute that you would remember any of that...
Is
That
Exact?

Oh yes, and what a lovely year and nine months we had... god. If I could only remember,
Oh yes, I do. March 19th was the first day - but you don't remember any of that...
Is
That
Correct?

Oh love... you just can't even understand what you did to me. You'll never understand
What I can't even think about anymore. Can you? Because...
Of
What
You
Did.

And after the summer and our time of fun... things got serious.
I told you my past and I gave you my everything - my words and my poetry.
Oh yes, then you're anger started and you called me a whore in your...
Own
Special
Way.

And fights broke out. Each time we had a quarrel.
Each one was a deep thrice cut into our thin flesh. Each one.
But you wondered why I couldn't let you win...
A
Single
One.

You won though... didn't you? Oh yes, you took the ultimate prize dear.
You took the one thing I could never win at because I could never
Do that. Not quite. Never that. You're so guilty, so sorry now...
But
You
Won,
Love.

And everytime we fought, I apoligized and you took that so sweetly.
Didn't you? You just used that like a throne. High enough for me to kiss your feet.
But we made up each time, you apoligized after and I forgave you for your crime.
That
Wasn't
All.

You remember your cousins wedding? Down at the golf course (why?) with
a patio of stone and the chairs all white in the sun. The lovely ceremony...
The way we held eachothers hands as they said their vows... and how
We
Watched
Eachother...
Too.
< br>I remember the way your family - your entire family wanted me. They asked
How is she? When is she coming over? But it was something I enjoyed.
They were my family too... you never realized... your brothers - all three of them.
We
Shared
Time
Too.

But everything I'll remember... it will all be different now. Because the days of summer will be forever maured.
The streets we walked and the places we talked forever tainted.
The sun, beautiful but no more a wonderful thing but a scorching reminder of
Your
Nights...
Unalone
Without
Me.
