Missed Opportunities Poem by James Sebastiani

Missed Opportunities

Opportunity missed

Summer Solstice weekend, nineteen eighty two,
The Stonehenge free festival, was the venue,
Fields full of crustys, bikers, and travellers
Ramshakle tents, buses and vans, all full of revellers,

There for the music and the drugs, to catch up with friends,
From all over they came, from John o Groats, to Lands End,
Mostly peace-loving except for some two wheeled exceptions,
Naked and free, chemically enhanced perceptions,

The music rang out, from all directions,
A cacophany of sound, at every intersection,
So decide i must, as darkness was falling,
A place to sit, which band was calling,

Found a reasonably good space amongst the crowd,
Not too close, the system was loud,
Then from nowhere, a girl appeared before me,
Can i sit next to you, of course you can, the grass is free,

We spoke, as the band was playing, her name was Nicky,
Here with her parents, the night was turning nippy,
So from out of her bag a blanket appeared,
She wrapped it around us, and moved herself near,

She pulled out a hash pipe, and loaded it up,
We took it in turns to toke from the cup,
Laughter, and haziness, began to ensue,
Closer we held, not quite knowing what to do,

Naive as i was, i seized the moment, expecting a rebuff,
But my kiss was reciprocated, we couldn't get enough,
She was beautiful, the memory would last forever,
We kissed, and smoke some more, but however,

Her parents were expecting her, it was getting late,
She had to go, but tomorrow was the Solstice, on the stones she would wait,
We'd watch the sunrise, and the druids perform,
An age old ritual, welcoming the dawn,

But....i slept through, missed the dawn and beyond,
I went to the stones, but Nicky had gone,
Thinking i'd forgotten, or just didn't care,
I looked and i looked, couldn't see her anywhere,

I think of her often, and those moments we shared,
The laughter and the kisses, briefly we were paired,
I hope she is happy, wherever she may be,
And everyonce in a while, spares a thought for me,
