Missing Our Friend Poem by Theodora (Theo) Onken

Missing Our Friend

It was just another night
...not even married for two years- -
Fighting about most everything in sight
...Unsettling emotions-the loss of someone dear.

Upstairs he cried out to his wife- -
...Said he had a gun to his head
We can only assume that she didn't believe him
...For in just a few moments - he was dead! ! !

It was a horrible night - they had been drinking heavily as usual - and fighting a lot. So young and not even married 2 years...he was so unhappy my son told me - our friend was upstairs at their residence - he yelled out to his wife that he had a gun to his head and was going to kill himself - apparently she did not believe him - hardly any time passed and the gunshot rang out. To this day - - ALL of us are still asking ourselves why....he was such a dear soul and one of my sons best friends. Everyone was broken by his death - most certainly his mother, father and sister. Just another reason why i do not like guns...it happened July 27,2001.

When i refer to the reserve below - i am speaking of the National Guard and the time he spent in Bosnia. He was deeply depressed before he ever joined them...and his drinking and drugging didn't help it...my son and i tried to help him early on as did some of his other non drug using friends...he was such a smart guy - with an enormous smile...his end was just so wrong and it never should have happened, ever. He had tried unsuccessfully to hang himself some years before this....we got all of the details from his female friend at the the time. Will always believe that his use of mushrooms, LSD, stimulants...and too many other substances to mention - plus alcohol only made his sorrows. worse.. He needed to be under the care of a good therapist and lots and lots of love....believe if he had that he might still be with us.

WE had known him since early 1994. He and my son became close friends. He met his wife to be sometime in 98 - thats when we met her too. They were still together in 99 - so on October 29 - they were married by the JP. They never made it to their 2nd anniversary. They drank heavily and fought all of the time. My son said he was not happy...he had been inclined to depression long before he joined the Reserve. Will never believe that being in the reserve had something to do with him wanting to kill himself...we knew him before the reserve and knew of his sorrows.
