Rembrandt, Raphael, Van Gogh
are most collectors' boon
but do not cause my heart to glow
like water on the moon.
Picasso, Monet and Cézanne
are marvelous, but better
is moonlight on the water, wan,
more wonderful and wetter.
Mel Gussow ('Steve Martin's Career Skips Down Another New Path, ' NYT, October 29,1998) says that Steve Martin has a place in his heart for really terrible paintings, like California landscapes. 'I was talking to a very big collector who has very sophisticated paintings, ' he said. “We were in a museum and he took me aside and confessed: 'You know what I really like, the way moonlight is reflected on the water.'' Mr. Martin agrees.
