My Beloved Mother Poem by NHIEN NGUYEN MD

*To my mother's soul

Ten years have passed since your death, Mom
On occasion of your death anniversary, I remember our old days.
I remember back to the days of my innocent years
You and dad carried us, seven children, many many times.
Mom, you were a very good house wife for a peasant man
With dad, you built your life by staying up late and getting up early.
Even on stormy days with terrestrial rains
You walked barefoot on muddy roads, with palm leaves raincoat.
During hot sunny days that could burn any rosy cheeks
You wore cone palm hat and sweats streamed down your eye browns
As a merchant you walked distance to village market
Your shoulders were bent by heavy loads of sunshine and produce.
I remember cold days of Winter
Family slept together with mats, blankets and straw mattress.
Then came the time we fled from North to South of Vietnam
Where it was warmer in Winter, so we didn't need straw mattress.
It was our worst time when the country was divided
We left our home, our land to endure lives of refugees.
I remember the time that you lulled us on hammock
The time you nursed us with your milk or ground rice.
You remembered by heart many popular prayers
You sang folk songs and recited your daily prayers.
You fed us with streams of your milk for years
These streams of your milk also grew us in love.
Five grownup children became successful in life
But you grieved two sons who died earlier in their lives.
Four children escaped war and have lived in a foreign land
Many years, we cried for you and you cried for us.
It has been ten years since the day you died
You were buried with dad later in his tomb by your side.
Now old age is sitting on my shoulders
I feel sorry that I will not be buried by your side.
For ten years, I prayed rosaries in morning and evening
That with God's grace, we may meet again in heaven, Mom and Dad.

MẸ TÔI YÊU QÚY

*Kính dâng hương hồn Mẹ

Mẹ ơi, thoáng đã mười năm
Nhân mùa giỗ Mẹ nhớ ngày xa xưa.
Nhớ ngày còn thưở thơ ngây
Bảy con, Mẹ ẵm Cha nâng bao lần
Tảo tần đời vợ nông dân
Thức khuya dậy sớm cùng Cha xây đời.
Nhớ ngày mưa gió tơi bời
Áo tơi mẹ khoác, trơn bùn chân không.
Nhớ ngày nắng cháy má hồng
Đầu mang nón lá, mồ hôi nhỏ mày
Nhớ ngày buôn bán chợ xa
Oằn vai thúng nắng rau khoai gánh gồng.
Nhớ ngày lạnh lẽo mùa đông
Gia đình chăn chiếu, ổ rơm cùng nằm.
Thế rồi bỏ Bắc vào Nam
Mùa Đông bớt lạnh, không cần ổ rơm.
Vận xui, đất nước chia đôi
Bỏ nhà, bỏ đất, khổ đời lưu vong.
Nhớ ngày ru võng à ơi
Mẹ cho bú mớm đàn con của mình.
Mẹ thì thuộc rất nhiều kinh
Ca dao mẹ hát, lời kinh Mẹ cầu.
Nuôi con dòng sữa bao năm
Hai dòng sữa Mẹ nuôi ngàn yêu thương.
Năm con giờ đã nên người
Hai con mất sớm Mẹ buồn lắm thay.
Bốn con tránh nạn nước ngoài
Bao năm khóc mẹ, Mẹ gìa khóc con.
Mười năm Mẹ đã qua đời
Dưới mồ Mẹ nghỉ, Cha con nằm gần.
Con giờ tuổi đã nặng vai
Buồn rằng khi chết, nằm xa Mẹ mình.
Mười năm lần hạt sáng chiều
Cầu khi con chết, thiên đình gặp nhau.
