My Own - Poem by wendy martinez

I am my own person. I do not belong to anyone nor have I nor will I. Do not chain my spirit back in your links of anger and sadness. I am lucky. I have found my true identity. I am destined to stand out. I was never meant to fit in with whatever the crowd would hold acceptable. I am and will always be born to fly. My life has been full of triumphs and tragedies. But yet, I thrust myself forward, throwing my head back and laughing at the pain that dares to stand in my way. I do not always have this amazing strength, but when I do, the world will know. They will know because the twinkle in my eyes is genuine. The pain in my heart is gone. The frown of melancholy has been banished from my face, the happiness coming to save me from a perpetual winter of depression and hatred. I am strong. I am a rock. I do not always fully believe this, but I do know that in my heart, I CAN conquer the world.
