My Son, My Daylight - Poem by HDB Best

My son is the one
Who I can pass my soul to
When this life is done.

His eyes inspire
This internal fire
To push myself higher.

His smile breaks the night
Brings out the daylight
He makes sunshine my only sight.

Someday he’ll be a man
And then he’ll understand
A little bit of who I am.
