My Stubbornness Poem by Henry Tong

My Stubbornness

Rating: 3.5

Stubbornly
I hand my heart to the chaotic beats:
the sirens will deafen the world
instead of me.

Resigned,
They would transform into fish
eyeballs bulging towards agony,
brains documenting the 7-second memory.

Out of water
a Greater land emerged outside me:
evolution defied decadence
when lungs in storms out-breathed.

Alone,
I struggled in the verge of experiment
until atop on the soil, I crept my feet
and found green shades my company.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I wrote this poem when invited to preface our school's yearly magazine. I was thinking what mentality was needed to profoundly change the school for the better, as the long established "school institution" had been criticized recently. In a way, we humans are just alike: we are on the verge of Data Tech and Artificial Intelligence, and whether we decide to "creep our feet onto that new land" is still in hot debate.
In this poem I used extended metaphor: the struggle of fish whether to get out of the water and disembark on new land is especially painful, accompanied by "self-isolation" of other mundane fish. However, once it was determined to step a way further, there a brand new world and many friends, whom it never expected, awaited.
I am more defined as an "experimentor" both in social science research and creative writing. I was given the opportunity to bring something new "on the verge" with unique type of thinking- probably one of the reasons why I love social science. I hope through this poem my friends could understand why this pushing-to-edge stubbornness means a lot to me.
