Nesting Dreams Poem by Suzanne Hayasaki

Nesting Dreams

Rating: 5.0

In a dream within a dream
Within a dream
I met you; I loved you;
You left me.

I woke within a dream,
Relieved to find you beside me
Only to find you cold, distant.
But something about time was amiss.

Was I young? Were you old?
Was I too timid, too bold.
Your eyes told me nothing
Mine begged.

I awoke again.
In a strange place.
Filled with unfamiliar faces.
I spotted you.
You raced away.

And so within these blurred worlds
I wander through twists and turns
Searching for some sign of you
Forever feeling your presence ahead.

I wake alone in a cold bed
I descend the stairs still doubting my senses
Until the smell of the coffee you have brewed
And the sound of your puttering in another room

Reassures me that the dreams have been defeated
And another day, neither glorious nor bleak,
In a string stretching back decades,
Has begun.

This poem reminds me, Suzanne, of the times I’ve been glad to wake from dreams to what we call reality. Vivid dreams—or snatches of them—are a subject I write on too. If you’re curious, see Bridge, Dolphin Dream, and I Was Visited. -Glen
