Never Drink Again Poem by D.N. Rebb

Never Drink Again

As he opens his eyes,
With that taste in his mouth he so despises
He realizes he's been sleeping in his chair
Why he was there, he's unaware
Another fizzy morning from last night's drinking
Leaving a pain in his head, from too much thinking
With no memory of the previous transpire
He wanders through the house, still tired
Perhaps, a glass of water is what he's wishing
As he approaches his wife in the kitchen
He immediately notices the black eye
An overwhelming feeling of guilt intensifies
Everything from last night is so foggy
She says nothing and hands him a coffee
As he doesn't know what to say, he, too, stays silent
Into a black hole he just wants to descent
He doesn't know how to make this right
Did he actually hit her last night?
He has no recollection
Loves her with all his heart and swears
To never drink again
He has no recollection
Loves her with all his heart and swears
To never drink again

As he opens his eyes,
With that taste in his mouth he so despises
He realizes he's been sleeping in someone else's bed
The constant throbbing won't go away in his head
Another fizzy morning from last night's drinking
Leaving a pain in his head, from too much thinking
With no memory of the previous transpire
He wanders through the room, still tired
As he looks at the dormant woman, whose name he can't remember
Let's her sleep, before there's a need to be a pretender
And cowardly sneaks out, then heads home
As he opens his door ever so cumbersome
There stood his wife, who had been crying
Yet still, she hands him a coffee in silence
As he doesn't know what to say, he, too, stays silent
Into a black hole he just wants to descent
He doesn't know how to make this right
Did he actually cheat on her last night?
He has no recollection
Loves her with all his heart, and swears
To never drink again
He has no recollection
Loves her with all his heart, and swears
To never drink again

As he opens his eyes
With that taste in his mouth he so despises
He realizes he's been sleeping in a ditch
Can clearly hear the morning rush crossing the bridge
Another fizzy morning from last night's drinking
Leaving a pain in his head from too much thinking
With no memory of the previous transpire
He wanders through the streets still tired
As he looks across the road to the now closed casino
Checking his pockets for any remaining c-notes
He tries to remember how much money he gambled away
Coming here, he now realizes, was just such a mistake
At home, his wife hands him a coffee in silence
She has now stopped with all the crying
As he doesn't know what to say, he, too, stays silent
Into a black hole he just wants to descent
He doesn't know how to make this right
Did he, actually, just gamble their entire paycheck last night?
He has no recollection
Loves her with all his heart and swears,
To never drink again
Never drink again
