New York! Poem by Craig Steiger

New York!

it is indescribably exciting to be in New York again, lifted up on silver wings to run with clouds, surveying the nation’s weathers and walking out of LaGuardia into Brooklyn...
Jane picks me up and we plunge straightaway into the New York traffic scene, I’m absolutely clueless as to where we’re headed madly jockeying in a swirl of taillights into the heart of the big city beast –
New York New York with its raw pulsing vitality, and when you’re disoriented your wondering senses are piqued into utter freshness, and a world you’ve never known, never will know, the mind staggering under its assault, Atlantic colonnade with its white estuaries and beachheads, red ferries headed for Staten Island, the magnificent Manhattan awaits with the delights and terrors unguessed and unplumbed, wham! goes the ignominious pothole and the old Toyota shutters, New Yorkers unfazed, black hat dreadlocked Hassid Jews in brick tenements as we mount into the neon’d nightfall, the soul awakened, stirs with anticipation, unknown the blood surges in a tide of deep adventure, tinman lost in droll wonderlands of its own unmaking!
