Well it has happened
It had to one day
You can't swim at 10pm
In the tropics on a deserted beach
Near a creek mouth
In this dark place
Next to their front porch
Big simple hungry eating machines
From way back before history
Waiting night after night
For just this chance
For this opportunity
To snatch and run
In the half moonlight
On the making tide
In the warm sultry water
This one came and killed
And so has itself been killed
Punishment for a lonely dinner
Not even digested
Its wild and sad this existence
Dangerous and erratic
Horrifying and humbling
Mother nature is
Out here in the warm night
Where the jungle meets the sea
- - - - - - -
So my curtain wafts in the night breeze
I cannot sleep
Awakened by the waves
And the thought of a last cry
I head down onto the sandy beach
Here I sit and think about it all
I did not even know her but
I see her face over the low water
And I sigh a sigh because
There is simply nothing else to do
- - - - - - - -
Today I was crazily asked about swimming there
By an unknowing oblivious soul
No, I said, not anywhere near there
not at night
You are too young and pretty
To be….?
But they don't believe or they forget
Or they just don't want to know
I smile thinly
I know
I have known for a long, long time
