Night Train Poem by Ijanric Howe

Night Train

Rating: 5.0

Sleep. Close eyes. Don’t think. Close eyes. Count perhaps.
Count seconds. Count the rattle of wheels on tracks.
Sleep. Eyes closed. Night come to close. Thoughts collapse.

Hours pass. Hours have passed. Gone. Again and again.
Time gone. Dissolved. Towns rushing past train.
Lights glaring in. Flash on wall. Gone. Out of frame.

Huddles against wall. Knees up. Shivering. Cold.
Old windows rattle and shake. Slivers of light break.
Again and again on back wall. Knees up. Curled.

How long to wait in the flashing cabin?
How long to wait before day dawdles in?
How long? Might wait all night. Tossing. Turning.

Then carriage jolts. Comes to stop. Stretch and strain.
Did sleep ever come? How long lain awake?
Daylight now. Dazzling on back wall. Headache.

Carriage lurches forward. Hours to go. Again.
