No Farewell, My Love Poem by Paul Sebastian

(Adolescent couple in love, temporarily separated, as one goes overseas for tertiary studies. The setting is a fusion of two different times, modern scene but spoken in Old English style. It is intended for classroom use, as a drama skit. Perhaps, use for an experimental theatre debut.
The scene is just outside the entrance of an airport departure lounge.
Andrew’s parents and two siblings watch straight-faced, whereas Adeline’s widowed mother and only sibling younger sister, in tears, stand the other side) .

Andrew: How am I going to face the days before me?
No day passed without you. Prospects of being alone, how it be?
Away for four long slow years!
Sleepless nights, yearning tears!
Your warm hands, hugs and kisses,
In my study, would I make a thousand wishes?
Forlorn heart seeking its soul-mate’s company
Would fate twist, change my destiny?
Darling, I fear for you and worse, I fear for myself
Strange land, friends; books, assignments: I’d delve
Dear, would out-of-sight make you out of my mind?
Would you forsake me, should a new boy-friend, find?
Darling, hold me tight in your arms, say: you’re always mine!
Bid me no farewell, but promise me, to drink our wedding wine!
Oh, how I hate to tear myself from you
And stay in another world, a degree to pursue!
Darling Adeline, why shed these beads of tears
Bid me not to go, we will abandon these fears!

Adeline: Andrew, darling, I shed tears of joy for you
Because you will make us a life all anew
Four fleeting short years, we will miss each other
But think our lives, for all eternity, together!
You will learn, know and grow: you will mature
Be back, as a man with prospects of a great future
Do yourself proud and there will be no regrets
Our lives would escalate, with no regress
Yes, sweetheart, I shall miss you terribly
Hearts raking in pain but think, responsibly
Four years will swiftly pass
True love seeks to test us
Fear not, love is patient, endures
Fate can play, meander its way
Steadfastly our love would stay
Darling Andrew, promise you’ll not find another
In this strange land, someone sweeter and better
Strange trends, bright lights, new friends and parties…
What if a beauty before you sways her education and riches?
If she be a better girl, fulfilling your parents’ wishes
If she completes your life, gives you happiness
I would let you go, for your life’s goodness
I have neither education nor riches…
Mere ordinary fish, among thousand fishes
If life should twist our fate, let it be
Selfishness is not mine. It’s you being happy
Which concerns me: now and always.
What more do I want for my love
Than seeing you, free, flying high above
Achieving all your dreams?
Mind not, even as our love alit, should dim!
As for now, let this fire of love burn
Burn, till my ship, to my harbor, returns

Andrew: Dear, dear, say no more! My ears ache!
In pain my heart, rakes!
Trust this love of mine
You, I’ll cherish, each moment of time!
I promise! My dear, I promise!
Forsake wild negatives, like disease!
Our hearts one, will never part
Though, just for a while, are apart.

(The PA system announces for all passengers
to be in the departure lounge, for boarding.)

Adeline: Here, love, take this scarf of mine….
Soaked in tears, sweat, perfumed, remind
You of me and keep you company
Though parted by the seven seas
Let my heart, in this scarf, therein lie
Though I may not rest by your side
Darling, I shall not bit you farewell
This is just love’s momentary hell
Let our hearts season for a season
For life’s good start be the reason
To be momentarily apart
It’s necessary life’s part

(The final announcement comes on for boarding)

Go, my darling Andrew, go! Make our dream
Become true, may our future gleam
Till then, I shall wait
Our love won’t be swayed
In you, shall my heart, abide
Thinking of you day and night
Go! Darling, you must go now!
Our future is ahead, take you bow!
