No More Tense Poem by Mehta Hasmukh Amathaal

No More Tense

I am visiting college hostel
The daughter is studying there well
My mind rushes fast to see her
She is so much liked and is very dear

My memory takes me back to early stroll
Uwaun, Uwaun* comes crying call
I see small baby girl lying on garbage
With some something written in tied page

I went near and shouted "Hey, anybody there"
Only echo returned with no mother
The baby girl was crying fast for food
I picked her up and brought home hiding from neighborhood

Her mother may be watching from distance
I gave no other thought and picked chance
I entered home with no noise
As I was divorcee and had no choice

How badly had I hidden fact?
But baby was an answer for all that
Now I was her mother and guide
She is so clever and I have now nothing to hide

I came back to sense
I was not at all tense
The college gate appeared
I slowly entered

• Uwaun, Uwaun…. Crying voice
