They ask me
what is harder-
to contain or to flow,
to stay or to go,
to hurt or to soothe,
to hide or to glow.
I pause
by the banks of river,
at the stations of trains,
where the heart beats restless,
where a diamond lies deep.
I understand—
none is easy, though.
Perhaps,
one holds the breath,
the other lets it through.
One teaches us to fall,
the other pulls us through.
And somewhere between the two,
where neither feels quite true,
we learn, at last,
what it means to choose
what it costs to choose.
