Not Ready - Poem by Chandra Hohmann

Change comes so fast
Leaves so slow
I’m not ready
Not ready for any of this

Not ready to be a junior
Not ready to leave my friends
Not ready to let go

Not ready to stop myself from smoking to much pot
Not ready to make all the decisions that need to be made
Not ready to give up college
And not ready to go

Not ready to realize all relationships don’t work out
That happens to other people not me
Not ready to admit my boyfriend just doesn’t care
Not ready to let him go
Not ready to give up

Not ready to worry
Not about all the things I have to worry about
Not ready to tell so-and-so to grow up
The world doesn’t revolve around them

Cause that would mean admitting the same to me

Not ready to stand up to my father
Not able to take it
Not ready to leave

Not ready to realize things just aren’t going my way
That problems just don’t go away

Not ready to cry over death
And fear suicide

Not ready to live
Not ready to die

Not ready to have all these people depending on me
Not ready to realize my family isn’t how I picture it
Not ready to realize things are never going to be perfect

Not ready for ever-closer senior year
Not ready to be a leader
Not ever going to follow

Not ready to grow up
Not ready not to
