La derniere feuille doree
Est devenue brune.

Le froid d'hiver vient vite

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The poet notes writes about the season of autumn, when the golden leaves have turned brown; it is a grey day, and soon it will be the cold of winter. His girlfriend has gone away, so his sombre mood matches the season. Hughes wrote many love poems to different women.
