Oceans Of Fun Poem by Gayathri Seetharam

Oceans Of Fun

Oceans of Fun
-Gayathri B. Seetharam
During our recent vacation in glorious Los Angeles and Ojai
I saw baby socks twice when getting down from the car
This took me back in time to when my 19 year old son was a child
And I couldn't help thinking that he was ever so precious
A gift from the Almighty God, our very own baby
Who smiled and gurgled when we spoke to him
And was also loads of trouble and later on, a bundle of cute mischief;

Having heard Harry Connick Jr. sing on You Tube videos
I think that a recipe for love also includes a child
And definitely not a delicious candlelit dinner
For one would be too full to make endless love
And a wink and a smile speak volumes
Of how happy one feels with a child;

You see, earlier this morning, I felt down in the dumps
For I exchanged pleasantries with one of our neighbours, a younger working mom of a one year old baby girl
And I had truant thoughts that made me feel
That I had been partaking of more than a fair share of humble pie as the once successful feminist engineer;

But then again, I am coming back from a beautiful vacation
And previously slain ghosts which threaten to haunt me once more
Should become grand old souls in my mind
Hence, I chastise myself thinking that just last Friday
I had, without a care in the world, enjoyed the waves on Malibu Beach
Breaking against the sandy shore with a foamy spray
And making me feel merry with its caress of my legs and feet;

There is a happy woman's gold, I thought,
When the receding waves momentarily made a glistening pattern
With the sunshine on the sand
And joyously, recited to myself,
There is a rock on top of which sits a man reading a book
There is another rock with a welcoming look upon which a woman decides to climb
But there is a third rock close to the shore which is craggy but tells a timeless tale of waves dashing against it
And thus there would be a crock of tales about rocks which also lead to me.
