Ode To Victor Hugo (4) - The Miserable Bishop On A Donkey
By: Freeyad Ibrahim
*
The miserable bishop on a donkey
Well-known for his eloquence and simplicity
He visited the ruggedest villages on his pastoral duty.
He could afford no other conveyance
than his own donkey,
as there was no other means,
at that moment, being so scanty.
The villagers, as rigid as their mountains,
who gathered to welcome him,
watched him with shocked eyes
to see a bishop on a donkey.
He turned to them as he was
dismounting the donkey,
smiling paternally and said
be sure, this is from necessity,
not from vanity.
After he finished his sermon
standing on the side of the road,
he concluded smiling cheerfully
Don't be anymore outraged
to see a simple priest,
as arrogant as me,
to be mounted like Jesus Christ
on a donkey!
