Fantine had a raging fever
And for part for the night, was delirious
Eventually however she fell asleep.
When she awoke, she saw Mayor Madeleine
Standing with his eyes fixed
in an expression of anguished supplications,
to a crucify nailed to the wall above her head.
Mayor Madeleine, transformed in her eyes,
Seemed to her to be bathed in light.
At first, she didn't venture to interrupt
But at length she asked timidly:
What are you doing?
He felt her pulse and said:
‘I've been praying for the Martyr
Above your head. You have suffered very greatly,
My poor child!
The hell you have endured
is the doorway to heaven.'
He sighed deeply
But she smiled up at him
That poignant smile lacking two teeth
her two teeth which she had previously sold
to get money
to keep her own child warm and fed.
