Old Love Song Poem by G J Salgado

Old Love Song

They met on an old country road not far from here
He could smell her perfume whenever she was near
There was a diner on the corner
When he went there she was always there
Their eyes would meet but all they did was stare
She noticed him and he noticed her
But neither of them would say a word

They would kindly share a smile
Both hoping they'd meet after a while
Passing each other through the aisle
Looking one another in the eye

Not knowing what to say
Maybe they'd exchange words another day
Feeling empty when they both walked away
Wanting to leave but craving to stay
They separated paths anyway
Not quite ready to meet today

Time passed and seasons came and went
Both letting more time to be spent
Soon it was too painful to be kept
Forces of nature would be sent

The hands of time were forced
Causing an unknown curse
Making a plot turn to the worse
Never knowing that they would get hurt

Their only mistake was time
The universe had made them mine
Crossing each other's path in line
Inside their heart's it would find

Until it finally happened on a stormy night
No one else in town within sight
Only them standing in each other's twilight
Both looking at an empty diner without light

He woke up to the sound of thunder
After he had a dream of his old flame
Which led into a lifetime of nightmares
Lightning strikes and he screams her name

When she was his; life made sense
Until the day she broke his heart
She seemed to take pieces of it since
Tearing him up inside and apart

He'd never be the same
As he screams her name
It's cursed upon his tongue
There's nowhere else to run

He tries to run but there's no escape
She used to sing a song about him
All he can think about is that day
He can no longer hear the words but the song never ends
