On The Catwalk. Poem by Michael Walker

On The Catwalk.

Rating: 5.0

I quite like to watch models on the catwalk;
they strut and glide down the stage looking indifferent.
The models show off designer suits and dresses,
sequined gowns that sparkle like stars.

The catwalk models are demure, never clamorous,
as they entertain and make a visual pitch
to the tailors, company buyers and designers,
who say the clothes and models are glamorous.

In time, the models' beauty will fade, cell by cell,
but beauty was theirs for a time in the spotlight.
If only good looks would last for a lifetime,
and we did not see sagging chins and worry lines.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Models like Naomi Campbell stand out in a crowd of plain ugly people.
I came up with this rhyme scheme: aabb/ cdcd/edde. Not exactly the across the three stanzas, but it still rhymes.
Elle MacPherson was an Australian model and actress who was popular in New Zealand in the 1990s. Elle was on billboards everywhere in Auckland at one stage.
Two relatedsongs on this theme are: 'Strut', by Sheena Easton, who is a beautiful singer still, and can be seen on You-Tube.
'On The Catwalk', by Radial By The Orchard (2006) . This song by a male group about a vain male model has a really different sound effects, singing and overall effect-totally contemporary, not dated. Why not check it out on You-Tube? I did. The name of this group is also 'different' from most.
COMMENTS OF THE POEM
Terry Craddock 29 January 2017

clothes are a subject we return to because of the power status or stigma of clothes clothes and appropriate clothes for the occassion define us with a glance, within seconds we are accessed valued and like clothes, taken up or discarded by the way we wear the right labels for the occassion, I recently finished a detailed study on clothes defined within an historical era, 'Prada Dressed In Style Stealing Spotlight Moments', a long poem which will be rarely read due to length but says something profound about clothes.

I agree. Clothes and image and first impressions are very significant.
