On The First Christmas-Day Poem by Gert Strydom

On The First Christmas-Day

(in answer to William Blake)

When Michael and His angels did the battle win
in the days of ancient antiquity
a plan was made to right iniquity.
while destruction came to be with sin.
At the time that Christmas did begin
the Lord God came to set all men free
and some do call it a story of mythology,
yet His love do my rocky-heart enters in.
As sure as the sun does in the heaven shine,
steadfast do stand the ocean and green hills
and men do chase after tin, iron and gold
the Son of God courageous and divine
did come to the factories, foundries and mills:
in the cry of a baby-boy God's mercy did unfold.
