On The Friezes Of The Wall Poem by Bishnupada Sethi

On The Friezes Of The Wall

Not as any mythological narrative
But someone very much in flesh and blood
I am drawn awestruck to the giant stone chariot,
Looking majestic from outside
With the immense carved artwork.

I am drawn towards-
Icons of musicians holding
Veena, Mardala and Gini
Along with plenty of skilful dancers,
Elephants, soldiers, caravans
Displaying vivid images
Of all human spheres.

I'm not sure
If I am being put to any test as
I'm propelled by an earthly desire.
An Apsara on the high walls
Being released from there
Walks away with me
Fuelling me with intense energy
Enacts a scene of courtship and intimacy.

For a thousand year
I am visiting the temple
But never getting inside
To see the deity.
I get transfixed each time
As another image
On the friezes of the walls.
